Libera Estate produce this stunning orange wine using 100% Keratsuda, an indigenous white variety native to the Struma Valley of Bulgaria. Vines benefit from the warm Mediterranean climate near the village of Hotovo, with sandy clay soils at 360m elevation. Fermentation takes place with grape skins for 50 days and the wine goes through no oak ageing and no filtration prior to bottling.
The result is a wine of dark golden appearance with nuances of amber. Typical Keratsuda aromas of pear, apricot and white flowers abound. The palate is surprisingly fresh with pronounced tannins from skin contact being balanced by refreshing acidity. Medium bodied, intense and more-ish with long length on the finish. Try with spicy South or East Asian cuisine, or roasted game birds or poultry.
Libera Estate is a relatively new project founded in 2013. They focus on local Bulgarian grape varieties, aiming to show their true potential in contemporary times. Their 100 acres of vineyards are 25 years old and situated in the villages of Hotovo, Lozenitsa and Zornitsa, with a dedicated team of locals helping to ensure the best cultivation and harvest.
